Inspired by Johanna Spyri's book, the film is about the adventures of the little orphan Heidi who is taken into the mountains to live with a grandfather she has never met, nicknamed Uncle Alp.
She does not get a great welcome, but soon the two learn to know and love one other. But their tranquil life is interrupted when Heidi is taken away from her grandfather to the city to be a companion to a girl in a wheelchair and learn her 'manners'.
