Irena Markovic accepts a job with Don Iridio to stage a paradoxical “Passion Play” in a Turin penitentiary. After gaining the inmates’ trust, Irena realizes that no one “inside” is willing to be cast as Judas, the betrayer, for reasons that in prison are clear to everyone. There are also people opposed to the play: Sister Bonaria, an inflexible but also very practical nun.
The impasse ends when Irena, whose has found support and warmth from the prison warden, has a brilliant idea: if a Judas can’t be found, why not tell the Jesus story in another way? A story without betrayal, condemnation, punishment and death? Rehearsals continue, with various mishaps and fairly good outcomes, until – like a bolt from the blue – startling news arrives…
