UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE

2010

The People’s Republic of China during the Cultural Revolution. Jing, an urban student, is sent to a remote mountain village for “re-education”. She is innocence personified. Her father is in prison, accused of being a “counter-revolutionary” and now her mother has to try to raise three kids by herself. Jing is aware that not only her future but her entire family’s depends on how the authorities will judge her willingness to be “re-educated”. Her prudent and meek behavior risks being changed when she falls in love with Sun, son of a high official in the Red Guards. Since their family backgrounds are so different their love winds up being not only hopeless but dangerous. But also stronger than any obstacle.
